The loss of player Jorge Lopez 0

Posted on July 04, 2009 by Cyd Zeigler

jorgelopezStatement from the NGFFL Board:

As athletes we all share a deep spirit for competition, something that we all have in common irrelevant of gender or sexual orientation.   One thing that makes organized sport in the GLBT community so special is because our community comes together in the spirit of competition as well as sharing a true bond of compassion and friendship that transcends everything else.

This past Friday, the NGFFL lost one of our brothers. While playing in Chicago Pride Bowl II, Jorge Lopez, 41, from the Michigan Panthers, collapsed on the field and was rushed by ambulance to a local Chicago hospital.   Sadly, Jorge did not regain consciousness and passed away.

Jorge was an excellent athlete, but an even better person and this is a loss felt keenly by all of us who knew him from football and softball tournaments.

Details surrounding memorial services are not available at this time. Our deepest sympathy goes to Jorge’s family, his partner, his friends and teammates in San Diego and on his current team, the Michigan Panthers.
