We’re now two days removed from Gay Bowl XI in Houston, and I’m still taken by how unusual, learning, and wildly memorable it was.
Well hello, Mother Nature!
That weather! Hallelujah for the people of southeast Texas who needed rain (as evidenced by the drought-born dust we ate on Friday and Saturday). But the timing was dreadful. For the first time in NGFFL history, championship day was canceled. I’ve always viewed flag football as a rain or shine sport. I guess I can let that go.
I love Gay Bowl – even after nine of them, it’s still my favorite weekend of the year. But truth be told, I didn’t sign up for commissioner because of the job’s Gay Bowl-supervisory piece. Yet there I was in torrential rain, thunder and lightning, with a group of other volunteers trying to be as thoughtful and fair as possible as we contemplated the first-ever cancellation of Sunday games over safety concerns. If I had my way, I’d prefer not to be in that position again. Bring on the sunshine! Or at least the robust contingency plan.

As we prepare for kickoff of Gay Bowl XI in Houston, we celebrate the NGFFL’s great national partnership with MillerCoors, which is now fully coming to life. We sincerely thank the company for its generous support of the growing and dynamic sports community that is LGBT flag football. The company recognizes that the NGFFL is where it’s at, and we’re honored.
Now let’s get to Houston and play fantastic flag football. Then let’s drink some beer together.
